Rebels and Lovers by Linnea Sinclair continues the saga of the Guthrie clan after the events in Hope’s Folly. The family is aware that Phillip is alive and working with the rebel alliance but their joy at his survival is tempered by their concern about the impact this will have on their status as one of the wealthiest and most powerful famiilies of the Empire. Phillip’s older brother summons their youngest brother Devin home to force him to comply with the family’s wishes and cement the family’s alliance with the political rulers by marrying into one of the most influential families. The problem lies in Devin’s disinclination to conform to the family standards and his secret yearning for the socially inferior and married former Guthrie-employed starship pilot, Captain Makaiden “Kaidee” Griggs. The abrupt disappearance of Devin’s nephew Trip, whose bodyguard was murdered, throws the Guthrie family into yet another upheaval and Devin’s frantic search for his missing nephew brings him back into contact with the widowed and down on her luck Kaidee. Devin has defied his father’s orders and is searching for Trip without the resources of the entire Guthrie family at his disposal and must keep himself alive in a hostile society while dealing with the myriad of conflicting emotions that renewing his acquaintance with the feisty Captain Griggs has triggered. Their search and struggle to stay alive becomes even more complicated by mysterious upheavals in the Guthrie family which transmits across several worlds and their respective societies. The relationship between Devin and Kaidee flowers but where it will lead and how long it or they themselves will survive becomes the ultimate question.
This ia another sizzling action-filled story in the series. Ms. Sinclair’s adroitness at world-building and facility at developing a multiplicity of believable and likeable characters make this tale another of her enthralling romantic sci-fi entries. I'm anxiously awaiting the next installment in the Guthrie clan saga.
OUT OF OPTIONS…Devin Guthrie can’t forget Captain Makaiden Griggs even though it’s been two years since she was in his family’s employ. A Guthrie does not fall in love with a mere shuttle pilot. Going against his wealthy family’s wishes isn’t an option—not with the Empire in political upheaval, much of it caused by Devin’s renegade older brother, Admiral Philip Guthrie. The Guthries must solidify their standing—financially, politically and socially—or risk losing it all. But when the Guthrie heir—Devin’s nineteen-year old nephew— goes missing, Devin’s loyalty to his family’s values is put to the test. And suddenly the unthinkable becomes the only option available: Devin must break the rules and risk allying himself with the one woman he could never forget—and was forbidden to love.
