“Rebecca’s Lost Journals” by Lisa Renee Jones is a collection of five contemporary erotic novellas that supplement the “Inside Out” series. Most of these were reviewed as stand-alone novellas as they were released, therefore there is a slight degree of repetition to this review. These novellas should be read for supplemental information by one who is familiar with the series of novels that comprise the series.
“Volume 1: The Seduction” by Lisa Renee Jones is a novella that details some of the journal entries that led the heroine of her ‘Inside Out’ trilogy to embark on her own journey of exploration and self-discovery. This is an eerie mirroring of the experiences that the heroine of “If I Were You” undergoes even as it provides a different view of several of the main characters from that tale. Rebecca Mason details her experience through journal entries that chronicle her entry into the world ruled by gallery owner Mark Compton as well as her somewhat tentative embarkation upon an exploration of the dark desires that her lover wants her to participate in which will require her submission to all of his sexual demands.
This is a quick erotic read that introduces the world of Rebecca Mason and gives a glimpse of the powerful men who are associated with the art gallery that both Rebecca and later, Sara, become involved with. This is the very beginning of her exploration into the world of BDSM and gives insight into her frame of mind using an entertaining epistolary technique.
“Volume 2: The Contract” is the next erotic novella that details some of the journal entries that led the heroine of her ‘Inside Out’ trilogy to embark on her own lifechanging journey. Rebecca has made a radical change in her life and is coping with the responsibilities inherent in her new job at the art gallery but she is also facing a personal crisis because her lover is pushing her to expand her sexual boundaries and engage in a formal arrangement that cedes him all control over their relationship.
This very sensual read continues to sprinkle hints about the mysterious man who wants to be Rebecca’s ‘Master’ but it felt a little too abbreviated in areas and I’d have expected more exploration of Rebecca’s feelings about being abruptly forced to face the contract stipulation that she most objected to without preparation. It is a little disturbing to see how ambivalent and easily swayed Rebecca is when faced with overt opposition to her stated desires. The use of the journal entries to give a glimpse of the woman who started the heroine of “If I Were You” on her own exploration of her options is a fascinating technique and whets the reader’s appetite for more of this fascinating series which helps alleviate the impatience for the next book in the alluring trilogy itself.
“Volume 3: His Submissive” is the third erotic novella that details some of the journal entries that caused the heroine of the ‘Inside Out’ trilogy to start her own investigation. Rebecca finally decides to take the radical step of signing the contract that her lover has given her and discovers that he has definitive ideas about when and whether she should sign. The contradictory signals that she receives from her lover adds to the stress in Rebecca’s life, especially as her lover continues to push her limits.
This is another searing chapter in the intriguing description of a somewhat conflicted woman as she feels her way through an emotional minefield and explores the world of dominance and submission. I am less than thrilled at the way the ‘Master’ is manipulating Rebecca and her reactions to his heavy-handed demands and a bit concerned at her malleability but this is another sizzling read that continues to tease with glimpses of the mysterious lover who is slowly taking over Rebecca’s life.
“Volume 4: My Master” is another sensual erotic novella featuring journal entries from the woman who forms the basis of the search initiated by the heroine of the ‘Inside Out’ trilogy that starts with the novel, “If I Were You”. Rebecca is still struggling with the parameters of submission dictated by the man she has entered into contract with and is conflicted about her next renewal. She is still concerned about the impact of this dark relationship upon her job and her master’s propensity to push beyond the limits that she is comfortable with and faces a pivotal decision.
This spicy novella continues to torture the reader with hints about Rebecca’s mysterious master even as it provides an insight into her mental and emotional struggle. The sizzling encounters are counterbalanced by the increasingly frequent message that her subconscious is delivering and the journal entries reflect the changing nature of her expectations. A titillating addition to the collection that makes one eager to discover more about the mysterious men in Rebecca’s life.
“The Master Undone” follows Mark Compton as he reels under the unwelcome revelation about his former sub, Rebecca, even as he struggles to cope with the frightening specter of his mother’s illness and meets the fascinating Crystal Smith for the first time.
This novella is a searingly emotional glimpse into Mark’s psyche and provides a look at the onset of his relationship with Crystal, who is so unlike the women he is used to. The professional and personal lines blur quickly and unexpectedly and one gets a slightly different perspective of the enigmatic and tightly-controlled man who has played a key role in the saga thus far.
