Pursued by the Rich Rancher

Diamonds in the Rough

This contemporary romance combines the excitement of a western ranch with a poignant look at the power exerted by family. The contrast between a family that wants to hide the less than perfect members and a family that will do anything because of love for their reigning matriarch is deftly portrayed. There are enlightening descriptions of the challenge of autism and methods of coping with some of the issues that arise, even as the budding romance building between the main characters is portrayed. There was no problem reading this as a stand-alone tale, although I would like to read the other stories in the series because I was drawn to the charismatic relatives in this family. Although much of the storyline is fairly predictable, this is still an entertaining and enjoyable quick read.

“Pursued by the Rich Rancher” by Catherine Mann is part of her ‘Diamonds in the Rough’ series published in the Harlequin Desire line. This story centers around Nina Lowery, who has devoted her life to caring for her young autistic son, Cody. Their fortuitous inclusion in a program at a horse camp that caters to special needs children has implications that they don’t realize, especially given that it is conducted by the prominent McNair family. Alex McNair thinks that he is reluctantly complying with his fatally ill grandmother’s request to ensure the safety of their family’s holdings. Little does he realize that her plans include the hope that a vulnerable widow and her young son will remind him of what is truly important in life.
