This exciting romantic suspense story has a wonderful blend of characters that show unexpected depths. The intensity of Law’s personality and his lack of a filter provides both a touching story and unexpected spots of humor. The gradual exposition of Jori’s past provides a great counterpoint to the journey that Law is undergoing as he deals with the radical changes to his life. Their bumpy relationship and the stormy one that Law insists on with the Doodle Samantha provides plenty of angst and an immediate connection that has the reader cheering for progress and groaning at setbacks. There are glimpses of Samantha’s perspective which provides a different take on the role of service dogs, and one should be forewarned that there are definitely shifting points of view throughout the story. The tension intensifies as Law attempts to resume his life, with his usual disregard for limitations and his rejection of those who want to provide him with tools to recover from his demons. I found myself cheering for all of them and rushing to finish the story but sad that it was over. I definitely would like to read more about those involved with the Warriors Wolf Pack and to get a glimpse of more of these fantastic canines (and of course, the alpha couples they are involved with).
“Primal Force” by D.D. Ayres centers around Lauray (Law) Batisse, a man who is tormented by his losses during the war. His extended recovery has been a challenge and he is disinclined to accept Samantha, the canine companion assigned to him to assist with his PTSD symptoms. Jori Garrison, Samantha’s trainer, wants her to succeed, but is inexplicably even more invested in alleviating the pain she sees in the eyes of the man the dog has chosen. Her own troubled past makes their complicated relationship even more of a challenge and each of them must search within for strength to get past the demons that plague them. Fortunately they all have hidden depths that will be called upon when circumstances require more than they ever expected.
Passion is always worth fighting for…
Jori Garrison trains dogs for Warrior Wolf Pack, which provides service animals for disabled veterans. Four years ago, she was wrongly convicted of a crime--thanks to her no-good ex- fiancé.
