Path of the Sun by Violette Malan continues the fascinating adventures of Dhulyn Wolfshead and Parno Lionsmane, Mercenary Brothers and Partners. Their bond has been sorely tested by previous events and they are looking forward to a simpler assignment that will expiate their transgressions both for inadvertently missing their evaluation hearing and for being intimately involved in the change in the leadership of Tegrian. Alas, Mercenaries must go where they are assigned and the escort of the Princess of Arderon to her groom, the Tarkin of Menoin quickly becomes yet another challenge. A series of murders lead Dhulyn and Parno to undertake the daunting task of walking the mysterious Path of the Sun as they search for both the murderer and a pair of missing Mercenary Brothers. Encounters with distant kinfolk reveal a different path taken by other Horsemen, a serious problem that again singles out those who are Marked and another aspect of the impact of the Green Shadow upon societal development. Scholarly companions from previous adventures utilize the skills they have developed to aid the Mercenaries in their quest but unfortunately final resolution of the problems presented will have to wait for the sequel.
Another richly textured sample of Malan's imaginative rendering of a world populated by a highly trained and steadfastly faithful brotherhood which serves as a bastion for upright and moral standards no matter where its members are posted. The author's deft description of the dexterity demonstrated by the duo paints vivid word pictures without the need for long explanations. Some of the elements are reminiscent of the horrific misunderstandings perpetrated by the "piggies" in another universe and the battle scenes are not quite as intense as previous works but the undeniable attraction and loyalty between the main characters is as striking as ever. The cliffhanger at the end is frustrating but there are still entertaining aspects that help counteract the dismay of dealing with the Green Shadow threat yet again.
A new fantasy adventure featuring "the highly talented Dhulyn and Parno."(Locus).
Mercenary partners Dhulyn Wolfshead and Parno Lionsmane think they're escorting the Princess of Arderon to her wedding with the new Tarkin of Menoin, but the Mercenary Brotherhood has a secret mission for them: find out what happened to the two Brothers who were sent on assignment to Menoin a year ago-and vanished.
Once in Menoin, they discover that the Brothers' disappearance is linked to a series of killings. And when the Princess of Arderon's corpse is found mutilated in the same way as the others, Dhulyn and Parno track the killer into the Path of the Sun, an ancient labyrinth from which people sometimes never return...
