Thea Harrison continues her mesmerizing tales of the Elder Races with "Oracle's Moon". The Oracle Grace was consulted by Rune and Carling but the rules of her sanctuary were violated by a vampyre in the previous tale ("Serpent's Kiss"). Grace survived the accident that killed her sister and brother-in-law and seriously injured her legs but she is trying to cope with her newly inherited children and her duties as an oracle even as she struggles to make ends meet. The Djinn Khalil is drawn to the youngsters but is not so enamored of their aunt/guardian even though he inexplicably returns to her household despite her hostile attitude. Surprisingly, Grace always knows when he is near, even when he is in a non-corporeal form and they slowly get past each other's prickly defense and discover that Grace's powers may be of significant interest to the Djinn. Grace struggles to reconcile her oracular powers with her natural talent and discovers that she can change the role of the Oracle which will alter the future but there seem to be factions with a different agenda in mind. Now, can she also change one stubborn Djinn? And survive long enough to make a comfortable place for herself and the children? Only if she pays attention to the appropriate prophecies.
A fantastic and enthralling addition to the series. Harrison continues to weave her magical spell that combines realistic occurrences and pragmatic concerns with mystical beings who learn that there are compromises that still need to be made even if one is an immortal being with unimaginable powers. The snarky repartee and enchanting confusion generated by an immortal and immensely powerful entity being faced with childish logic make this another entertaining read that will provide a whirlwind ride through a world peopled by vampyres, griffons, djinn and the like. Make sure you don't start this unless you don't have anywhere to go or anything else to do because it will grab your attention and keep you hostage until the end comes all too soon. Another very enjoyable read.
