A Novel Idea Mystery, #5

“Off the Books” by Lucy Arlington is a fun look at the hard work involved in the journey from an idea in an author’s mind to a book being purchased by a reader. I enjoyed getting a chance to see behind the scenes of a literary agency and the myriad of tasks an agent may be expected to deal with. I am not familiar with the series but had no trouble reading this as a stand-alone story, except for the odd temptation that Lila is faced with that causes her actions and words to be in conflict--which may be related to past events. I like the multitude of secondary characters, both human and four-footed, and the twists and turns, although I wasn’t thrilled with Lila’s actions with respect to her love life. I think this is a light enjoyable mystery that will be enjoyed by those looking for a quick afternoon respite.

This cozy mystery is part of the ‘A Novel Idea’ mystery series and features literary agent Lila Wilkins who seems to be adding to her reputation as a murder magnet when a murder threatens to disrupt one of the agency’s major events. Juggling the challenges of combining a bridal expo with literary features, Lila is determined to solve at least one of the mysteries stumping her, if she can stay out of the killer’s clutches long enough.
