No Cats Allowed

A Cat in the Stacks Mystery, #7

“No Cats Allowed” by Miranda James is a fun look at some of the eccentric characters who staff an academic library and the challenges faced, some of them fatal. The personable cat who is beloved by almost everyone has his own opinion about the contentious temporary boss, and continues to provide support and succor to all who need his special brand of comfort. It was entertaining to watch the mystery gradually get solved, but I thought some of the parts were a little forced and I guess I am spoiled by some of the other cozy mysteries I have read which have animals in a much more active role. I did love reading about Diesel’s perambulations with Charlie and had fun remembering my own experiences at working in an academic library (although I shudder at the gory use of the stacks in this story). This is a fun light read that will be enjoyed by those who like gentle mystery stories and are ailurophiles.

This story is part of the ‘A Cat in the Stacks Mystery’ cozy series that continues to chronicle the adventures of semi-retired rare book cataloger and library archivist Charles (Charlie) Harris and his faithful Maine Coon cat, Diesel. The library staff is struggling to deal with the obnoxious temporary library director Oscar Reilly, until somebody takes care of the irritation. Charlie must step up and help solve the mystery, hopefully in time to save the library and its jobs as well.

Book Blurb for No Cats Allowed

In the latest mystery in the New York Times bestselling Cat in the Stacks series, librarian Charlie Harris and his Maine Coon cat Diesel must clear a friend when the evidence is stacked against her…

Springtime in Mississippi is abloom with beauty, but the library’s employees are too busy worrying to stop and smell the flowers. The new library director, Elwyn Dillard, is a brash, unfriendly Yankee who’s on a mission to cut costs—and his first targets are the archive and the rare book collection.

As annoying as a long-overdue book, Dillard quickly raises the hackles of everyone on staff, including Charlie’s fiery friend Melba—whom Dillard wants to replace with someone younger. But his biggest offense is declaring all four-legged creatures banned from the stacks.

With enemies aplenty, the suspect list is long when Dillard’s body is discovered in the library. But things take a turn for the worse when a threatening e-mail throws suspicion on Melba.

Charlie is convinced that his friend is no murderer, especially when he catches sight of a menacing stranger lurking around the library. Now he and Diesel will have to read between the lines, before Melba is shelved under “G” for guilty…
