This intriguing young adult story provides a sobering look at the repercussions of bullying but has a delicious and thought-provoking paranormal aspect. It is somewhat disconcerting that Edie's planned revenge seems to be regularly circumvented by unusual occurrences that wreak permanent solutions on some of those who have wronged her and one waffles between glee at the comeuppance that some characters experience and dismay and chills at the finality of the solution. One is saddened by the focus on physical appearance that permeates the story and which is so important to both of the main characters, but I think that this is a reflection of the mores of today's society. I was impressed by the creativity that shines a spotlight on both the harm that we can inflict on one another as well as the challenge of understanding someone else's perspective without having his or her experiences. This was a thought-provoking and entertaining story that also has a delightfully creepy aspect and I anxiously await the next story in the series.
"Mortal Danger" by Ann Aguirre is part of 'The Immortal Game' series and gives a glimpse of the life of a teen named Edith (Edie) as an unexpected intervention causes her to make a life-changing decision that changes the dynamics of her life in disconcerting ways. The role that Edie's new guide Kinan plays evolves as she gets to know him better, until they tread into territory that may jeopardize their very existence, and the decisions that she makes could force her into a worse fate than she ever imagined. Now Edie will know intimately the reasons behind the adage, 'be careful what you wish for'.
Revenge is a dish best served cold.
