This exciting addition to a fun new adult fantasy series continues to reveal more about the complicated Cassie Scot who has to juggle her duties to the town as a deputy and the obligations inherent in being a member of a very powerful magical family. The intriguing and startling revelations that are gradually uncovered change the dynamics of power and the various secrets that swirl around her force Cassie to soul-search and decide what she really values. I enjoyed the episodes that revealed more of Cassie’s character although I was dismayed by some of the experiences that she and her family underwent which highlight the dangers of bigotry, no matter who or what the item of contention is. There are several mysteries that I look forward to having solved in the final book and although one might be able to read this story as a stand-alone, it would be much better to start the series by reading the first two books, “Cassie Scot: ParaNormal Detective” and “Secrets and Lies”. This story does a very nice job of blending fantastical magic and character studies and I anxiously await the conclusion of the series!
“Mind Games” by Christine Amsden is book 3 in the intriguing ‘Cassie Scot’ fantasy series which features the continuing adventures of the only non-magical member of a powerful magical family. Sadly, Cassie has been betrayed by her longtime friend and romantic interest, Evan Blackwood, although their relationship continues to be very complicated. Cassie becomes involved with the powerful Matthew Blair, much to the dismay of those around her, and this, added to the tinderbox that the town of Eagle Rock is becoming as those without magic continue to foment unrest, threatens to destroy everything she holds most dear. Shifting alliances and hidden agendas alter the balance of power and it will require painful choices to try to overcome the dangers that are looming.
Beware your heart and soul…
Evan broke Cassie’s heart two months ago, and she still doesn’t know why. She throws herself into family, friends and her new job at the sheriff’s department, but nothing helps. The only thing that finally allows her heal and move on is the love of a new man, mind mage Matthew Blair. Cassie finds him…irresistible.
Matthew may also be the only one who can help keep the non-magical residents of Eagle Rock from going crazy over the murder of a beloved pastor’s wife. It looks like a sorcerer is to blame, but while Cassie tries to figure out who, others take matters into their own hands. With tensions running so hot, a single spark might set Eagle Rock ablaze.
