Midnight's Kiss

A Novel of the Elder Races, #8

This entertaining addition to one of my favorite paranormal series gives a more detailed picture of King Julian and provides a different perspective on the being who was such a formidable opponent to Carly during her struggles. This story would be better appreciated by someone who at least has read the prior story in the series, however, it probably can be read as a stand-alone. Why deprive yourself, go ahead and read the entire series!

I was a little squeamish about some of the more violent scenes in the story, but I liked that Melisande is not a helpless heroine in need of rescue, but instead is very resourceful and an excellent foil for Julian. It was great to see some of the characters from the previous books and despite the ache at the betrayal that each of these main characters experiences, I enjoyed getting a new and improved opinion of Julian's motivations.

The balance between wry self-deprecation and intense emotionalism is always the best part of these stories for me and I love getting another glimpse of these intriguing folks as they deal with common issues in their unique and inimitable ways, given the type of creature they are. This author's talent at building an intriguing world peopled with sexy and complex beings never ceases to amaze me and I look forward to many more stories about the Elder Races.

"Midnight's Kiss" by Thea Harrison is part of the 'Elder Races' series and continues where the exciting "Night's Honor" leaves off. The complex relationship between Nightkind King Julian and Light Fae Queen's daughter Melisande has soured but that doesn't stop Julian from attempting to rescue her, despite his knowledge of betrayal by at least one of his subjects. Forced to endure horrific torture and threats to their lives, the two of them must find a way to work together, but first they must decide whether they can overcome the damage that they have inflicted on each other and survive the damage that others are trying to impose upon them.
