Midnight Marked

A Chicagoland Vampires Novel, #12

“Midnight Marked” by Chloe Neill blends paranormal elements with remarkable contemporary elements that bring one into the story and make one think that these are folks you could get to know and live near, then suddenly realize the danger that surrounds them and may change your life forever—if you survive the encounter. The gradual change in dynamics between the main characters and the redemption that has been achieved at great cost is reflected in this particular story which does a great job of bringing a lot of things full circle. I love the allusions to popular culture and its juxtaposition with beings who have actually lived through historical events, the delightful exchanges with trusted girlfriends who are powerful sorceresses yet can squeal like teenagers, and the exciting unveiling of clues to solve the mystery posed by this story.

Interestingly, it is possible to read this story as a stand-alone segment despite the multiple threads that are running through it. Naturally, some of the backstory would be helpful and there are certainly spoilers for previous books, but the characters are nicely depicted and enough background is recapped that one has no problem picking up the story and enjoying the repartee, exciting fights, and romantic interludes. This is another great addition to a fascinating series peopled by humans, practitioners of magic, vampires, and shapeshifters and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

This urban fantasy tale is an exciting chapter in the ongoing struggle for Chicago that pits humans against supernaturals who are themselves not united. Merit’s role as a Sentinel causes some friction in her relationship with Ethan Sullivan, the Master of Cadogan House, since it conflicts with their instincts as lovers. A mysterious alchemical link threatens to disrupt fragile alliances and the machinations of enemies who are determined to destroy Chicago and reform it under one being’s control must be countered, but convincing wary allies and establishing a line of defense may take more time and resources than Cadogan House has.
