Midnight Frost

Mythos Academy, #5

This exciting young adult paranormal series does an excellent job of providing a fun read about teens who have the typical issues of insecurity and a search for their place in society. The difference? These teens are related to gods and goddesses, use amazing powers of healing or psychometry or exceptional agility. The fascinating elements such as Vic the talking sword, Nyx the Fenrir wolf pup and Rocs are counterbalanced by weighty issues such as ostracism, post traumatic stress and the loneliness of orphaned survivors but there are wonderful elements of humor and sweetly sentimental occurrences to keep one from being overwhelmed by sadness. I love mythological creatures such as gryphons and was delighted to read about their role in Gwen’s life. The family issues that Gwen has to deal with as well as her ongoing conflict with Logan Quinn make parts of this a very poignant read but there are still plenty of exciting fight scenes and intriguing developments to keep things moving along. A great addition to an inventive series.

“Midnight Frost” by Jennifer Estep is part of the enthralling young adult paranormal ‘Mythos Academy’ series and continues the tale of Gwen Frost and her friends as they continue to struggle against the evil Reapers who want to restore the evil god Loki to power. Gwen has learned to use her power of psychometry which allows her to know the history of items (or people) that she touches but her position as Nike’s champion has resulted in her having an assignment, to gather artifacts and keep them out of the Reapers’ hands. The only problem is that the Reapers are determined to obtain the artifacts for themselves and don’t care who they have to kill or injure to get them. Gwen and her allies need to find a way to outsmart the evil ones and they will only succeed if they are able to recruit new people to join them and convince old friends to return.

It was just a typical night at the Library of Antiquities-until a Reaper tried to poison me. The good news is I'm still alive and kicking. The bad news is the Reaper poisoned someone else instead. As Nike's Champion, everyone expects me to lead the charge against the Reapers, even though I'm still hurting over what happened with Spartan warrior Logan Quinn. I've got to get my hands on the antidote fast-otherwise, an innocent person will die. But the only known cure is hidden in some creepy ruins - and the Reapers are sure to be waiting for me there...
