"Lord of the Abyss" by Nalini Singh is the final episode in the intriguing the `Royal House of Shadows' quartet that describes the struggle to recover the kingdom of Elden from the evil Blood Sorcerer who murdered the royal rulers and was instrumental in dispersing their heirs throughout several worlds. Liliana uses her own blood to transport herself to the Black Castle and confronts the Guardian who rules there. He is a monster in black armor with the visage of a Prince Charming but has no memory of the fact that he is one of the lost heirs of Elden, Micah. Her goal is to circumvent her evil father's machinations and assist Micah in being present to fulfill the final requirements needed to avoid the fate that goes into effect twenty years after the kingdom of Elden fell. Liliana must fight both her heritage and the enchantment that rules the once cosseted youngest prince of Elden, finding allies in the most unlikely forms. The Guardian must find a way to cope with the unusual being who is surprisingly unafraid of his monstrous form but he is sure that she will be appalled by his cursed form and reluctant to allow her to work her way past his defenses, both physical and mental. The two scarred souls will only achieve success if they find a way to work together but ultimately it may require more of a sacrifice than they are willing to pay.
A fantastic ending to the series. There are elements of humor and sensual romance to leaven the horrific images that reflect the Blood Sorcerer's evil and the secondary characters have an allure all of their own. The fantastical creatures and the vivid scenarios described breathe life into this imaginative version of the Beauty and the Beast tale which will ensnare the reader into the enchanted world created by Singh with her usual dexterity. A fitting finale that is all too short, it would be wonderful if there were more tales from this intriguing world.
