“Kept” by Maya Banks has many of the elements that have made her a favorite of those who prefer dark erotic romances: a sinfully delicious alpha male with a penchant for BDSM, a naïve yet adventuresome young woman who is willing to be spoiled senseless and tutored in hedonism, and an element of danger. Unfortunately, I wasn’t enthralled by this story the way I usually am with this author, and several things just didn’t sit well with me.
I prefer my heroines to have some backbone, and although some finally was displayed, Hayley’s naivete got frustrating…from the acceptance of the housing, the lack of curiosity about Silas’ role and background, even the blithe assumption that neighbors wouldn’t be disturbed by violin practice in the wee hours …and her metamorphosis from virgin to kinky sex kitten was just a little too abrupt for me, not to mention her bloodthirsty embrace of the revenge wreaked on her behalf. I also couldn’t understand her sudden prowess with a weapon that hadn’t been mentioned until a final climactic battle scene. The ebb and flow of the relationship that develops between the two main characters got annoying as each tries to make decisions for the other’s ‘own good’ without communicating, which tends to irritate me when it happens over and over again.
I realize that part of my frustration is also due to my joining this series in progress, and getting flashes of the backstory without sufficient detail, so I would recommend that one read the first two stories in the series and hopefully understand the overarching conflict that affects and connects the lives of all of these folks. This is a dark and sensual story filled with violence, and caution should be used by those who have triggers.
This erotic contemporary romance is part of the ‘Enforcers’ series and details the meeting between Hayley Winthrop, a young aspiring violinist who has been dealt a series of crushing blows in her life, and Silas, a hardbitten enforcer who has clawed out of a horrendous background and formed a closed circle of brotherhood that has only recently added a feminine presence to leaven their darkness. Hayley somehow works her way into the circle, only to find that the benefits of being the focus of a sinfully dangerous male may be outweighed by the risks, which may be fatal.
From the author of Mastered and Dominated comes the third of the Enforcers novels. Kept is the searing story of a woman who finds sanctuary in surrender...

But when Hayley meets his every demand with unwavering acceptance and love, he is overwhelmed by her goodness and gentle spirit. He knows that the dark stain on his soul can never be erased—and rather than risk destroying the most beautiful person he's ever experienced, he'll have to do the hardest thing he's ever had to do. Let her go. But he's totally unprepared for the lengths to which Hayley will go to fight for his love and for a future brighter than the sun...
