Island of Glass

Guardians Trilogy, #3

“Island of Glass” by Nora Roberts is a lovely mystical and romantic tale that draws one into a world where a mermaid walks on the land and loves a traveler and a werewolf ensnares an immortal while a sorcerer combines love and power with a seer. The magic is that this is all blended so seamlessly with practical things like assignment of chores, using pizza takeout as a way to avoid kitchen duties, or the challenge of searching for the perfect engagement ring, that this world is entirely believable. I love the effervescent Annika, with her whimsical tablescapes and forthright approach to sex, as well as the growly exchanges between the taciturn Doyle and feisty Riley.

This author is so adept at creating lush and vivid scenes that one tends not to pay attention to the constantly shifting points of view and instead become enthralled by the quirks each character displays. Sometimes things got a little too easily solved, to my way of thinking, and occasionally I thought the pace was a little erratic, but overall, this was both an exciting action-packed quest and a charming romance that was a wonderful conclusion to the trilogy. I didn’t even try to read this without having read the previous stories and I suspect it would be a bit too confusing to read this as a stand-alone story, since multiple threads are tied off in this tale. This story is a celebration of magic and kinship and love, and provides a wonderful and sensual interlude to relax with.

This romantic urban fantasy concludes “The Guardians Trilogy”, which tells of the urgent search for a set of three stars hidden by the goddesses of the moon. The unique powers of the six who were drawn together and have formed both familial and romantic bonds are needed more than ever as the evil Nerezza uses whatever tools she can find to destroy members of the cohesive group. The triumph of good over evil will require tenacity, courage, intellect, and, of course, a fair amount of magic.
