In the Dark of Dreams by Marjorie Liu is part of her Dirk and Steele series, centering on Jenny, one of the Steele offspring, and Perrin, a merman. A chance meeting when both are youngsters resonates throughout the years as each copes with terrible losses. Jenny has discovered the perils of her far-reaching family with its sinister ties into horrendous occurrences while Perrin has descended into a hellish existence on land. Their paths eventually cross as brutal events bring them back together in an unusual bond that is fraught with danger and bloodshed. Unlikely allies and unsuspected enemies force them to face the link that each has unconsciously depended on for most of their lives but an external force must successfully weave them together if they and the world as they know it will survive.
An interesting premise and a story with a lot of promise but marred by an overabundance of gratuitous violence. Perhaps a familiarity with all of the Dirk and Steele novels would help with the morass of backstories and conflicts that cause a bit of confusion. Each of the major characters is significantly injured over and over again while very little forward progress in the storyline takes place. Thankfully, there is some degree of resolution that takes place eventually but the shadowy secondary characters are still pretty much a mystery by the end of the book.
He could never forget the boy with the ice blue eyes...She was only twelve when she saw the silver boy on the beach, but Jenny has never stopped dreaming about him. Now she is grown, a marine biologist charting her own course in the family business -- a corporation that covertly crosses the boundaries of science into realms of the unknown...and the incredible.
And now he has found her again, her boy grown into a man: Perrin, powerful and masculine, and so much more than human, leaving Jenny weak with desire, and aching for his touch.
But with their reunion comes danger. For Perrin and Jenny -- and all living creatures -- their only hope for preventing the unthinkable lies in a mysterious empire far beneath the sea...and in the power of their dreams.
