This raw and gritty fantasy series has been building up to this moment over the past three volumes and this gutwrenching and action-filled tale reminds us that these are indeed a different class of beings from the light and fluffy ones so often portrayed in books about the Sithe. The complex relationships that reflect the stark contrast to the softer human entanglements both enthrall and appall yet one can readily understand the motivations propelling the actions of many of the players in this very long-term struggle.
The author has done an impressive job at creating a very realistic (and frightening) picture of a world that coexists with ours, peopled by those who have no qualms about slaughtering humans as if they are cattle, switch loyalties according to who is wielding the most amount of power at any given time, and who have impressively immense abilities to be loyal and cruel. The series should definitely be read in order and one should have a strong stomach as much of the action is not for those who are squeamish, or whose sensibilities are easily offended. This is a compelling series of stories about a harsh but enthralling culture, sprinkled with magic, exciting battles and sometimes uncomfortable relationships as well as fearsome but fascinating creatures such as kelpies and formidable wolves and loathsome Lammyr and this was a fitting conclusion that was breathtaking, mesmerizing, and logical within the framework of this universe. I look forward to finding out what other tales this impressive author will share with us next.
“Icefall” by Gillilan Philip is the exciting conclusion to the ‘Rebel Angels’ series and features the ultimate clash between Kate NicNiven and Seth MacGregor as the struggle for control of the Veil escalates. There are plenty of beings caught up in the power struggle that spills over into those in the land of Exile, and no one’s survival is assured, especially with Kate’s determination to use whatever tools will garner her the prize she seeks. The ongoing conflict between inclinations of the heart, loyalties, and Sithe pragmatism makes every decision fraught with political implications and may affect the existence of everyone on both sides of the Veil. Only the ruthless will win, the question is which of these foes is truly the most able to embrace that quality and what the world will be like when victory is won.
Death stalks Seth MacGregor’s clan in their otherworld exile. Kate NicNiven is close to ultimate victory, and she is determined that nothing will keep her from it. Not even the thing that took her soul: the horror that lurks in the sea caves. But Kate still needs Seth’s son Rory, and his power over the Veil. And she’ll go to any lengths to get him. Seth’s own soul is rotting from the wound inflicted by Kate, and survival for his loved ones seems all he can hope for. But might a mortal threat to his brother’s daughter force him to return to his own world to challenge Kate? And will Rory go with him? Because Rory suspects there’s a darkness trapped in the Veil, a darkness that wants to get out. But only one Sithe knows how near it is to getting its way: Seth’s bound lover, the witch Finn. Nobody gets forever. But some are willing to try...
From critically acclaimed author Gillian Philip, Icefall is the final installment in the Rebel Angels series.
