Gods & Monsters

A Shadows Inquiries Novel, Book 3

Gods & Monsters is the next of the Shadows Inquiries series by Lyn Benedict and continues the tale of Sylvie Lightner aka Shadows. Trying to recover from the upheavals in Chicago and the distance between Demalion and herself, Sylvie is hunting for a missing woman when she inadvertently becomes embroiled in yet another arcane struggle. Ostensibly operating according to standard procedure, Sylvie calls in the discovery of a multiple murder site only to find that the responders are themselves murdered. Lacking any willing assistance from the witch community, Sylvie has to resort to using the dark magics employed by the necromancer Tierney Wales with his creepy Hands of Glory, particularly that of the misogynistic ghost Marco. Sylvie discovers that she is about to become caught in yet another struggle between gods and cannot depend on any useful support from the ISI (Internal Surveillance and Investigations) branch but she discovers that a previous ally is about to become a much bigger player than she ever imagined and the price for her assistance may be more than Sylvie can afford to pay...her soul and/or Demalion's.

Another gripping tale of the unconventional PI who keeps eking out an existence that depends on her keeping a cool head in the face of unimaginable horrors while defying gods and immortals with virtually unlimited powers. A different perspective of the necromancer and a disappointing dearth of Demalion's presence but plenty of action and vividly described ambience provided by the Florida background are combined into an exciting read. Sylvie's allies tend to epitomize the phrase..."with friends like these...who needs enemies?" but somehow she finds a way to juggle all of the beings as she seeks to avoid destruction of the universe.

Sylvie Lightner is no ordinary P.I. She specializes in cases involving the unusual and unbelievable. When she finds the bodies of five women in the Florida Everglades, Sylvie believes them to be the work of a serial killer and passes the buck.
