For Heaven's Eyes Only

A Secret Histories Novel, #5

Simon R. Green continues his saga about the Drood family in For Heaven's Eyes Only. The entire clan is still in an uproar after the murder of the matriarch and Eddie is still struggling with determining his place in the far-reaching network. An encounter with the Satanist organization leads him on several excursions, including a visit to the Supernatural Arms Faire to look for the fabled prototype that is intended to be the answer to Drood armour. The Faire has just about anything weapon-related that can be imagined, from a cup of djin to a gigantic robot but Eddie, Molly and the Armourer (Uncle Jack Drood) discover that the Satanists are making a audacious attempt at cornering the market on weapons. Eddie also recruits the most powerful telepath in the world to assist with the family Librarian who was damaged from his encounter with an other-dimensional entity. The telepath could become a problem if the knowledge obtained from the Droods is released but it turns out that there is an even bigger threat on the horizon. The Droods will have to learn to work together if they're going to try to defeat the unimaginable evil facing the world but they will also have to find the traitor in their midst.

Another exciting chapter in the Secret Histories series filled with the extreme weapons, unlikely scenarios and confusing conflicts that permeate the stories. The constant barrage of enemies are reminiscent of the serialized cliffhangers of several popular superheroes. There are a few contradictions and inconsistencies (it would seem that nobody will be in any doubt that Shaman Bond and Eddie Drood are one and the same person despite the charade Eddie persists in portraying), the conflicts get wilder and wilder and the ending is a particularly annoying cliffhanger but the overall entertainment provided by the outlandish characters and their even more outrageous weaponry is undeniable.
