Eternal Hunger by Laura Wright is the first in the “Mark of the Vampire” series which introduces the Roman brothers, vampires who have escaped the rigid world of Order which strives to regulate their kind. The eldest brother, Alexander, prematurely experiences morpho, a change that makes him susceptible to the sun’s rays and establishes his imperative to hunt for his true mate. Dr. Sara Donohue discovers Alexander collapsed on her front doorstep and becomes inextricably entwined with a frightening yet intriguing world that she never realized existed. Alexander rescues Sara from a would-be attacker and discovers that he is strangely reluctant to allow her outside of his sphere of influence, despite the proscriptions against fraternizing with a non-vampire. Sara’s attacker becomes a recruit for an evil organization that is determined to break the domination of the Pureblood vampires but he is still obsessed with Sara who becomes one of the focal points in the struggle that Alexander is coerced to join in order to protect those few individuals that he cares for.
Interesting characters with enough teasers to establish storylines for all three brothers but a bit too much similarity to another vampire series featuring large attractive hard-edged males engaged in a struggle against those who want to contaminate the “pure” race and who recruit humans to expand their numbers. Dr. Sara’s brother is very confusing as his condition seems contradictory (virtually catatonic yet can fool the caretakers enough to secrete a cache of pills) and the Impures who guard the tunnels and take care of Alexander and his brothers are very nebulous. Hopefully, the paucity of information will be rectified in future volumes and a bit more exposition will showcase the unique qualities of these characters. Nice potential for an intriguing series.
