Paranormal Diversions

Enthralled, an anthology edited by Melissa Marr and Kelley Armstrong is a remarkable collection of sixteen tales written by some of the leading authors of young adult paranormal tales. There are wonderful additions to beloved and well-known series as well as several stand-alone stories featuring vividly depicted characters. Following are thumbnail sketches of only a few of the tales.

Bridge by Jeri Smith-Ready is a poem that addresses the difficulty that Mickey and Logan's other siblings are having with his death. It's a masterful depiction of the difficulty experienced by those left behind framed within the intriguing world of her "Shade" series that allows only those who are very young to interact with ghosts.

Automatic by Rachel Caine adds to her "Morganville Vampires" series and presents the mind-boggling idea of a drink dispensing machine that allows 24 hour access to...warm blood! Michael has been asked to demonstrate the ease of use of the machine but has a bad reaction to the potency of the drink which makes him question his ability to be around his mortal girlfriend, Eve. The creepy normality of Morganville and the glimpse of several of its key inhabitants are effortlessly depicted with Caine's trademark dexterity.

The characters from Kelley Armstrong's "Darkest Powers" series are revisited in Facing Facts as the teens continue to reluctantly learn more about their powers and respective backgrounds. The complications of their relationships and powers are touched upon in this excellent teaser that will engender interest in the series.

An amazing homage to "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" combined with a creepy idea of cannibal Girl Scouts is presented in Jessica Verday's At the Late Night, Double Feature, Picture Show.

Giovanni's Farewell by Claudia Gray tells the tale of a couple of teen twins who are coming into their powers that begin manifesting while they are on a trip to Italy.

Carrie Ryan's Scenic Route is a somewhat disturbing post-Apocalyptic tale of two sisters planning a trip.

A Mortal Winter King by Melissa Marr follows the royal couple as they deal with the repercussions of his sacrifice to save her life and take a unique vacation trip, unhindered by the trappings of royalty.

A densely packed tome filled with intriguing tales and imaginative worlds that will be sure to please long-time fans as well as tempt newcomers to add new authors to their lists of favorites.
