Duke of Pleasure

Maiden Lane, #11

“The Duke of Pleasure” by Elizabeth Hoyt is a delightful addition to a fascinating series, although the Lords of Chaos organization seems to be like a Hydra…every time it seems they are being destroyed, they come back stronger than ever. I think Alf is a great character, having overcome such a tragic childhood and managing to become a resourceful and capable force of nature. The painful history that Hugh has dealt with and the challenges he faces both personally and professionally seem daunting but his determination and the loyalty he’s inspired make him an admirable character.

I love the combination of Alf’s cheeky sass and naivete that keeps Hugh on his toes, and the escalating danger that complicates their relationship and adds to the excitement of the story. I wasn’t crazy about Hugh’s obtuseness and the insults he inadvertently confers but things work out well after all. The lovely fairy tale that is spun out at the beginning of the chapters enhances the story and reinforces the idea that kindness is handsomely repaid. The glimpses of the next story in the series make me anxious to find out if the Lords of Chaos are finally going to get their comeuppance and more satisfied that Iris is not as much of a doormat as she appears!

This sensual historical romance is part of the ‘Maiden Lane’ series, and continues the saga of the attempt to bring down the evil Lords of Chaos. The Duke of Kyle, Hugh Fitzroy, is working at the King’s behest, and crosses paths with both the Ghost of St. Giles and the urchin Alf. Hugh’s discoveries about both personas complicates his search, and his desire to protect his motherless young sons as well as the urchin who has snuck into his affections force him into a position where he may have to choose between his honor and his heart, and lives are balanced on his decision.

Book Blurb for Duke of Pleasure

Bold. Brave. Brutally handsome. Hugh Fitzroy, the Duke of Kyle, is the king's secret weapon. Sent to defeat the notorious Lords of Chaos, he is ambushed in a London alley-and rescued by an unlikely ally: a masked stranger with the unmistakable curves of a woman.

Cocky. Clever. Courageously independent. Alf has survived on the perilous streets of St. Giles by disguising her sex. By day she is a boy, dealing in information and secrets. By night she's the notorious Ghost of St. Giles, a masked vigilante. But as she saves Hugh from assassins, she finds herself succumbing to temptation . . .

When Hugh hires Alf to investigate the Lords of Chaos, her worlds collide. Once Hugh realizes that the boy and the Ghost are the same, will Alf find the courage to become the woman she needs to be-before the Lords of Chaos destroy them both?
