Dragons Deal

Dragon Series

Dragons Deal by Jody Lynn Nye and the late Robert Asprin is the third in the series that features Griffen McCandles.  The Eastern dragons are still not happy with the upstart who has taken over the New Orleans gambling concession and have decided that Mai is not accomplishing enough efficiently.  Griffen’s sister Val is coping with her pregnancy, not helped by the fact that the baby’s paternal grandmother is making overtures despite continued rejection from the McCandles family.  Meanwhile, Griffen has been tapped to be the King of the Fafnir krewe for Mardi Gras, a position that entails far more than being a pretty face and requires deep pockets, perhaps deeper than Griffen is prepare to deal with.  Griffen must decide which of his purported allies are actually going to advance his cause while juggling with the complications presented by hosting the first dragon Mardi Gras contribution in several decades.  The advantage of becoming more familiar with other dragons and their powers is leavened by the necessity of dealing with their preconceived methods and perceptions.  Griffen must decide whether to stay true to his ideals or conform to the established rules while defending his territory.  The question becomes whether Griffen has amassed enough talent and power to defend his territory and to truly represent the dragons as they should be.

Another enjoyable addition to the saga of the McCandles family who have started to become comfortable in New Orleans as they learn how to live up to their heritage.  Val is still relatively underdeveloped as a character but the tale gives a nice overview of the extensive preparations that are undertaken to put on the wonderful displays New Orleans is known for during Mardi Gras.  A couple of the characters are a bit confusing but there is a nice cameo by the elusive Rose.
