“Devil’s Gate” by Thea Harrison is a novella that continues the tale of a mysterious set of tarot cards which is traveling through the community of Elder races which are coexisting with humankind. Seremela Telemar is a medusa who is a medical doctor, pathologist and academician and has joined Carling and Rune in their new Miami center in order to focus on private medical research. A family emergency results in her traveling to Devil’s Gate, a sprawling wild mining city in Nevada that is out of control and characterized by lawlessness. Duncan Turner, is an internationally famous lawyer and Carling’s youngest Vampyre progeny. He has been intrigued by the sexy medusa and brings his expertise in Elder Races inter demesne law to her side in order to assist her. The mutual attraction is just a welcome bonus for both of them and they find that they make a formidable team as they strive to rescue her niece from a perilous situation that the tarot card deck that she stole seems to have embroiled her in.
The novellas of this series provide welcome glimpses of the Elder world to tide over aficionados between novels. The cameos provided of the major players such as Rune and Carling, or Niniane and Tiago remind the reader of some of the fantastic characters who people this world. I love the imagery in this novella. I am fascinated by the vision of Seremela’s snakes fighting for a glimpse through her door’s peephole or being lulled to sleep in the same fashion as a parrot quiets once its cage is covered and I adore the passage where Duncan tells Seremela that he accepts her just for who she is. Intriguing explanations of medusae, a brief description of vampyre politics and an interesting view of a mining town all combine to make this an entertaining quick read.
When it comes to love between a medusa and a Vampyre, it’s every man, woman, and snake for themselves.
As a coroner, medusa Seremela Telemar has always felt more comfortable chatting over a dead body than over drinks. But when her wild niece, Vetta, runs off to Devil’s Gate, a lawless town that has sprung up overnight in a modern-day gold rush, she knows she has to extricate her before the rebellious girl gets into real trouble. Though she’s confident in her head snakes’ ability to defend her against attackers, Seremela is still a bit nervous about braving this modern-day Wild West by herself.
Vampyre Duncan Turner is not about to let his new co-worker go into that chaos alone. His Vampyric power and lawyer smarts make him the perfect ally, and the fact that he already had his eye on Seremela for more…personal reasons, doesn’t hurt matters. Any romantic thoughts pull up short, however, when they arrive at Devil’s Gate and learn Vetta is set to hang by morning.
In order to save Vetta and themselves, Seremela and Duncan are going to have to fight fire with force and magic with fangs. And pray they make it out of Devil’s Gate alive.
Warning: Contains mother effin’ snakes in planes, cars, tents, and beds. Luckily, our hot Vampyre hero doesn’t mind them one bit…
