This complex paranormal series is always filled with remarkable beings and fascinating worlds. The ongoing quest for the keys to the gates between heaven and hell and Risa’s guilt at losing the first of these essential items to prevent destruction of the world is a backdrop to the chaos that her life consists of and one wonders if she EVER is going to have something go her way. This dark series always leaves me exhausted as it seems that Risa goes from one catastrophe to another and it is difficult to reconcile the conflicting goals that each being thrusts upon her even without the dark undercurrents swirling in the background. There are so many fascinating elements in these stories, including Risa’s sentient sword and tattoo, that everything is prone to being lost in a sensory overload but they all somehow add to the allure of this dark series. One hopes that Risa will eventually find a way to cope with all of the demands imposed on her by others as well as her own conscience but it doesn’t look like that this will happen any time in the near future which is good news for fans of the series but not for Risa herself! It is definitely recommended that one start with the beginning of this series to truly appreciate the complex undercurrents and past history between many of the characters.
“Darkness Hunts” by Keri Arthur is part of the ‘Dark Angels’ series and continues the complicated saga of Risa Jones, whose half-werewolf/half Aedh nature subjects her to virtually impossible demands from all of the factions intersecting with her life. Risa continues to be torn between her possibly coerced attraction to the revenge-obsessed Lucian, her forbidden attraction to the dark angel Azriel whose duties as a Mijai add to his conflict about his reciprocal attraction to Risa and her regretful tolerance of the treacherous Jak. Add in the ongoing struggle to find the remaining keys that everyone wants her to find for their own nefarious purposes and a crazed killer who seems as comfortable on the astral plane as he is on the physical one and one wonders how Risa manages to keep going in the face of such overwhelming burdens. Fortunately for everyone, her indomitable stubbornness is one of her strongest assets.
New York Times bestselling author Keri Arthur returns to the enthralling Guardian World—and a twilight realm of danger and desire…
Risa Jones, half-Aedh/half-werewolf, can enter the realm between life and death. She can speak to the dying and the dead, and she can see the reapers, collectors of souls. What she can not yet see is the identity of a stranger murdering women and draining their blood. Now Risa must summon her gifts to find him, even if it means putting her own life in danger. But Risa needn’t look far. The killer knows who she is.
He tells her his victims are infected by darkness and he’s fated to destroy them. Fascinated by Risa, he engages her in a sinister game: the chance to save the life of his next victim by deciphering his series of clues. In a race against time, she enlists the help of the reaper Azriel.
But as an attraction between them grows, so does the fear that the stranger’s motives are only part of a larger, more dangerous stratagem—one that that has lured Risa and Azriel into the dark.
