Dark and Stormy Knights

Editor P.N. Elrod has gathered another stellar collection of short stories by some of the most popular authors in the paranormal genre.  Each writer puts his or her twist on the concept of a knight involved in a paranormal struggle, sometimes as part of the world that he or she has previously established.  Husband & wife team Ilona Andrews provide a new spin on the onerous duties a mercenary can be contracted for especially when it is a Questionable Client.  Jim Butcher explores the implications of John Marcone’s role as head of a domain in Even Hand.  Shannon K. Butcher demonstrates the life-changing power of innocence in The Beacon and Rachel Caine reminds us that Even A Rabbit Will Bite with her description of the showdown between the last dragon and the dragonslayer that should be ending its life.  Myrna the ghost is her usual helpful self in P.N. Elrod’s Dark Lady while Deidre Knight’s heroine struggles to free her Beknighted captive through an intricate woodworking puzzle.  Vicki Pettersson gives more depth to the Light vs. Dark balancing act between the agents of the Zodiac in Shifting Star and reminds the reader of the danger incurred by mortals who get caught in the eternal struggle.  Rookwood & Mrs. King is Lilith Saintcrow’s chilling look at the difficulty of distinguishing between lawyers and vampires.  Carrie Vaughn ably finishes up the collection by showing her character Cormac’s soul-searching conflict during one of his werewolf hunts, which is aimed at God's Creatures.

Dark and Story Knights is a thoroughly enjoyable anthology that showcases some of the best writers of the urban fantasy/paranormal genre.  This is a wonderful blending of tales that will intrigue those who haven’t read these authors’ series while entertaining those who consider most of these characters as familiar acquaintances.  Prepare to be captivated and enthralled but don’t plan to do anything else until the book comes to an end all too soon.
