“Daily Zen doodles: 365 Tangle Creations for Inspiration, Relaxation and Mindfulness” by Meera Lee Patel is exactly that, a collection of drawings with accompanying thought-provoking quotes that encourage one to relax and doodle. Ideally, one should use this book in a quiet room, with enough time to decompress, and start out being guided by the drawings in the beginning of the book. Those drawings gradually become less detailed, to allow one’s own creativity to flourish and the quotes are from a variety of philosophers (including Buddha, Walt Whitman, Lao Tzu, and many more), to stretch one’s ideas in novel ways. I was fascinated that there were meandering lines as well as recognizable figures to prompt creativity, emphasizing that there are no particular rules to drawing, and that the quotes ranged from the esoteric to the pragmatic. I suspect that one could learn something new every day from this volume, no matter how many times one looks at it.
