Chronicles of the Nubian Underworld: The Awakening

The Awakening by Shakir Rashaan explores the Dominant/submissive society of the POC (people of color) in the Atlanta region.  It is a chapter in the Chronicles of the Nubian Underworld that centers around the Dominant Couple known as Lord Ramesses and Lady Neferterri (vanilla names of Kane and Mercedes) as they deal with changes to their house of Kemet-Ka.  The stringent rules and protocols that make up the by-laws of this alternative society are lumped into the category “WIITWD” (what it is that we do) and, only by adhering to the standards set by the leader of the community can participants achieve proper status and power.  Amenhotep is the Master of the community and sets a high standard for his followers by providing them with a luxurious setting for them to explore their sexual boundaries.  Not everyone is content to play by the rules of the game and several power struggles ensue, complicating the lives of those whose role it is to enforce the rules and the games suddenly turn deadly serious with consequences that rock the very foundation of the alternative society and threaten to destroy everything that the members have worked so hard to establish.

The Awakening is an interesting glimpse into the BDSM world with an ethnic twist.  Delightfully spicy interludes are interspersed with vignettes that demonstrate the need for consensus within a relationship in order to successfully participate in a fully functional alternative society.  Unfortunately the heterosexual scenes are glossed over in favor of the female/female interactions and there is a need for a little better editing but overall an interesting introduction to the Nubian Underground.

“What goes on in the Palace, stays in the Palace...”

Being a part of the alternative lifestyle can be a wild experience, but it also has its dangers as well, as Ramesses and his “Mentor” Amenhotep can attest to, definitely. Ramesses and his wife, Neferterri, have their bevy of submissive beauties at their wanton call and desire, not to mention a close inner circle of friends that they “swing” with, while Ramesses’ “Mentor” Amenhotep is on the verge of collaring his newest, and tenth, slave to reside with him at the Palace. Lavish collaring ceremonies, decadent parties, libidinous guests. Life is good within the “Nubian Underworld” of ATL.

But all hell breaks loose when Ramesses and Neferterri begin losing their submissives to a variety of reasons and rationales, trouble begins in what was assumed as “paradise” between one of the couples in the inner circle after the party at the Palace, and Amenhotep himself getting caught up in a sting operation that unfortunately makes the news and threatens to blow the lid off of the “POC Community” that thrives on the anonymity of its members. Despite it all, everyone in the circle is there for one another, no matter what.

Chronicles of the Nubian Underworld: The Awakening is a journey inside the BDSM POC (people of color) community, its ups and downs, and the ties that bind, literally and figuratively, between the principle players of this new series. With its twists and turns, and surprises along the way, it is sure to become an “awakening” for any who dare to journey to the “Dark Side”.
