Jeri Smith-Ready returns to radio station WVMP and its quirky personnel in Bring On the Night. Ciara Griffin is reluctantly complying with her end of the bargain and is undergoing indoctrination training for IACMUCE (International Agency for the Control and Management of Undead Corporeal Entities). She suspects the agency of wanting to continue to use her as an experiment due to the strange properties of her blood with respect to vampires but she has an uneasy truce with them.. She has a complex relationship with her own personal vampire, Shane McAllister, and they have agreed to disagree on the concept of faith since she is a product of her con artist background and he is deeply religious. A disconcerting illness threatens to destroy her world and the life that she has carved out with Shane and her vampire dog Dexter but the mysterious creation of zombies overshadows the very real personal problems that Ciara and Shane are experiencing. Ciara’s best friend Lori is doing her best to continue planning her wedding to David that includes the vampires that have been so important in their lives but the ceremony threatens to be postponed forever as the members of the wedding party continue to fight against the threat of total annihilation.
An intriguing and entertaining look at the symbiotic relationship between humans and vampires and some of the hazards of the interactions. Ciara is an irreverent but conscientious person who tries her best to be supportive of all of those around her, despite acknowledging her own very real failings. The fascinating concept of a 120 lb. vampire dog combined with the tongue-in-cheek scenarios (pizza as a defensive weapon) and the intriguing divisions of the IAMCMUCE make this an entertaining read and, although it would help to have read the prior two books in the series, this one is quite enjoyable as a stand alone work.
WHAT’S BLOOD GOT TO DO WITH IT?
Recovering con artist Ciara Griffin seems to finally have it all. A steady job at WVMP, the Lifeblood of Rock ’n’ Roll. A loving relationship with the idiosyncratic but eternally hot DJ Shane McAllister. A vampire dog who never needs shots or a pooper-scooper. And after nine years, it looks as if she might actually finish her bachelor’s degree!
But fate has other plans for Ciara. First she must fulfill her Faustian bargain with the Control, the paranormal paramilitary agency that does its best to keep vampires in line. Turns out the Control wants her for something other than her (nonexistent) ability to kick undead ass. Her anti-holy blood, perhaps? Ciara’s suspicions are confirmed when she’s assigned to a special-ops division known as the Immanence Corps, run by the Control’s oldest vampire and filled with humans who claim to have special powers. To a confirmed skeptic like Ciara, it sounds like a freak fest. But when a mysterious fatal virus spreads through Sherwood—and corpses begin to rise from their graves—Ciara will not only get a crash course in zombie-killing, but will be forced to put her faith, and her life itself, in the hands of magic.
