“Born to Darkness” by Suzanne Brockmann is the wonderful first novel in her ‘Fighting Destiny’ series. It introduces an elite group of individuals with the Obermeyer Institute who have fantastical mental powers and are fighting against an insidious organization that seeks to addict followers using horrifically mined product from young girls who have exceptional mental talents of their own. The drug known as ‘Destiny’ enhances mental capabilities but also has horrific side effects including causing a condition known as ‘jokering’ which seems to remove any sense of morality or sensitivity to pain and makes the person virtually unstoppable.
Prickly Michelle Mackenzie (Mac) is one of those known as a Greater-Than with a higher than 50 percent integrated level who blithely ignores the advice of their team leader, Dr. Joseph Bach, to remain celibate. Her ill-conceived decision to pick up a lover for the evening results in a liaison with blacklisted SEAL Shane Laughlin who just happens to have been recruited by the very institute that she is affiliated with. Remarkably, Shane seems to enhance Mac’s own powers and despite her resistance, he is also determined to become a significant part of her life. Mac’s partner, Stephen Diaz, has a similar level to hers but has been suppressing his own longings for Institute researcher Dr. Elliot Zerkowski who reciprocates his interest but never dreams that he has a chance with the object of his desires.
The team gets drawn into a race against time to rescue a young girl named Nika Taylor whose older sister Anna had no idea that she was a ‘Potential’ before she is kidnapped and ruthlessly tortured. Dr. Bach is unwillingly drawn to both and must fight his own demons in order to help them.
This was a great story that demonstrates all of the reason that Suzanne Brockmann is adored for the dexterity with which she creates an intense tale peopled by realistic characters tempered in impossible situations. Each of the main characters has been trained to be efficient fighters both physically and mentally yet they all have their individual strengths and weaknesses. The loneliness inherent in being different from most of those around you is one of the prices being willingly paid by these heroes who are willing to back up their beliefs with their very lives. The action is riveting, the premise behind the series is intriguing and the romance is irresistible...what more can you ask for? Hurry with the next story, can’t wait for more tales of these charismatic people.
As the New York Times bestselling author of the Troubleshooters series and a “superstar of romantic suspense” (USA Today), Suzanne Brockmann has an acclaimed history of taking readers’ breath away with her novels of hot passion and high adventure. Now she takes her talent for sexy, action-packed storytelling in a thrilling new direction: forward—into a future, both fantastic and frightening, that only the brilliant Brockmann could envision.
Dishonorably discharged, former Navy SEAL Shane Laughlin is down to his last ten bucks when he finally finds work as a test subject at the Obermeyer Institute, a little-known and believed-to-be-fringe scientific research facility. When he enters the OI compound, he is plunged into a strange world where seemingly mild-mannered scientists—including women half his size—can kick his highly skilled ass.
Shane soon discovers that there are certain individuals who possess the unique ability to access untapped regions of the brain with extraordinary results—including telekinesis, super strength, and reversal of the aging process. Known as “Greater-Thans,” this rare breed is recruited by OI, where they are rigorously trained using ancient techniques to cultivate their powers and wield them responsibly.
But in the depths of America’s second Great Depression, where the divide between the haves and the have-nots has grown even wider, those who are rich—and reckless—enough have a quick, seductive alternative: Destiny, a highly addictive designer drug that can make anyone a Greater-Than, with the power of eternal youth. The sinister cartel known as The Organization has begun mass-producing Destiny, and the demand is epidemic. But few realize the drug’s true danger, and fewer still know the dirty secret of Destiny’s crucial ingredient.
Michelle “Mac” Mackenzie knows the ugly truth. And as one of the Obermeyer Institute’s crack team of operatives, she’s determined to end the scourge of Destiny. But her kick-ass attitude gets knocked for a loop when she finds that one of the new test subjects is none other than Shane, the same smoldering stranger who just rocked her world in a one-night stand. Although Shane isn’t a Greater-Than like Mac, as an ex-SEAL, he’s got talents of his own. But Mac’s got powerful reasons to keep her distance from him—and reasons that are just as strong to want him close. She’s used to risking her life, but now, in the midst of the ultimate war on drugs, she must face sacrificing her heart.
