Blood Fire

This paranormal tale is well populated by a wide variety of paranormal beings and extraordinary situations. The intensely sensual relationship between Octavia and Matthew is undermined by their inability to communicate clearly and by their apparently intermittent attraction to one another. Octavia’s enemies seem to increase by the day and her life is complicated by those who claim to be allies yet seem to have their own agendas. The sudden powers which develop and grow in certain characters as well as the multiple beings who suddenly appear make the story a little too erratic for my tastes and I am still not sure about the motivations for the actions of some of them. The solution to several of the problems was a bit disingenuous and I have trouble believing the actions, particularly that of Lucifer, which allowed everything to be tied into a neat package, not to mention the culpability of Octavia’s father for certain events. The premise is interesting and the intimate scenes are nicely spicy but events are just a little too chaotic for my tastes.

“Blood Fire” by Sharon Page follows the complex relationship between young Lady Octavia who has an inexplicable illness that threatens to be fatal and makes the decision that she will not go to her death a virgin. Hedonistic Matthew Winthrop, the Earl of Sutcliffe, is struggling with a strong sense of guilt for his actions in the Carpathian Mountains and has sought help from the Royal Society for the Investigation of Mysterious Phenomena. Octavia is remarkably invigorated by her night of passion but becomes dependent on the reluctant man who is too obsessed with destroying a creature who in turn has plans to rule by destroying the males of races which include vampires, werewolves and the like. Unfortunately, Octavia becomes more pivotal to the struggle than anyone ever dreamed she could be and Matthew will have to determine whether his past or his future is going to have the most influence on him.
