Blade Bound

Chicagoland Vampires, #13

“Blade Bound” is one of those exciting books where (based on past experience with this couple) things just can’t go as smoothly as one hopes. The excitement and happiness that permeates a milestone celebration such as a wedding, even though it is for such long-lived beings, is given that wonderfully characteristic twist that is the hallmark of this powerful couple. The fun version of Merit’s bachelorette party—almost exactly what I would have wanted, the tiptoeing around the stringent rules of tradition as parsed by the formidable arbiter of etiquette, Helen, and the dread of discovering just what Merit’s mom and Helen have planned—all of that combines to form a wonderful backdrop to the life-and-death struggle that was an inevitable counterpoint to this long-awaited celebration.

I always love the snark and humor that underscores the deep ties these disparate folks have woven and this story was yet another fantastic showcase of their powers, loyalty, and inventiveness. Of course, the personification of one of their opponents is one of my favorite creatures, and I was dismayed at the destruction that it wreaked, but the bonding that accompanied the resistance effort was inspirational. I think someone new to the series could enjoy this as a stand-alone book, but would miss many of the nuances and maturations of the relationships, so it would be better to read other stories in the series as well. Pay attention to the chapter headings, as they add another layer of fun, and be prepared for some wonderfully unexpected twists that showcase the author’s whimsical sense of humor. The epilogue was perfect, and I can’t wait to read more about these remarkable folks in the next series.

This urban fantasy is part of the ‘Chicagoland Vampires’ series and features the remarkable wedding of Cadogan Master Ethan Sullivan and his Sentinel, Merit. Given past experience, the happy couple and their friends, allies, and associates all approach the upcoming nuptials with happiness and a well-warranted jaded expectation that something will inevitably go wrong. When it does, in a manner threatening to cause a schism between humans and Supernaturals, those endangered are a rapidly expanding pool, and the ultimate sacrifice of not only dreams and hopes, but the very existence of key figures is demanded.
