Blackveil by Kristen Britain picks up the tale of Karigan G’ladheon after the exciting adventures experienced in the first three books of the series. Karigan is more comfortable in her role as one of the king’s Green Riders but her father is still reluctant to accept that the daughter that he expected to succeed him in his successful merchant business is involved in what he considers to be anathema, magic. Karigan has been knighted and bestowed with land grants, has responsibility for the Green Rider budgets and is generally content except for her unrequited romance with Zachary. A remarkable legacy from her deceased mother foreshadows a new task that will take Karigan and some of her companions deep into the eerie Blackveil forest as she races against enemies who wish to rally the inimical forces against the Sacorians. Alton D’Yer is still struggling to deal with the breach in the wall around Blackveil and Karigan’s minstrel friend Estral becomes intimately involved in the research despite Alton’s initial reluctance. Political maneuverings surround Zachary and his intended bride Estora who must navigate through the perilous waters of the succession even while Karigan and her companions struggle to survive the dangers of Blackveil. Zachary’s cousin Amberhill has his own path to follow after his ill-advised involvement in Estora’s abduction and acquires an unusual companion as he follows the promptings of a mysterious dragon ring. The world may never be the same and as usual, Karigan has a key role to play in the ongoing struggles.
An entertaining look at the loyalties and interrelationships between the Green Riders, Weapons and the royals with additional glimpses into the mysterious Eletian society. Karigan is still involved in her complex relationships and some of the actions of the players in this work aren't quite consistent with previous occurrences but overall a nice tale.
