For me, a great story is both entertaining and thought-provoking. If it is part of the science fiction genre, it provides fantastical scenarios that seem very plausible and realistic. This author definitely satisfies those requirements in such a way that I comfortably settle back into her well-conceptualized universe and enjoy the roller coaster ride of adventures. I loved the ‘Valor’ series and was sad when it came to an end, therefore I was delighted to discover that Torin was going to have more adventures for us to tag along on.
I enjoy the way a multiplicity of meanings are folded into various beings’ actions, including alien mores and traditions that are integrated with those of humans. The seesawing between following patterns established by long service in the military and balancing expediency with protocol is artfully described as Torin continues with her primary goal of keeping everyone alive to fulfill the task set for them. This is definitely not a story for those who are somewhat squeamish and I think it would be hard to join this universe without having read some of the books in the original series because there are so many nuances that are related to prior events. I love the way Torin’s relationships have deepened and equilibrated (and was amused at some of the compromises that have been reached…6 hour time limit before it’s agreed that Craig can try to effect a rescue?) and I am still in awe at the way this author can reveal so many details with a few pithy sentences. I think this is a great introduction to the new series and I look forward to discovering what other hair-raising (for those of us who cannot manipulate our ‘hair’ independently) adventures Torin and her crew get into next.
“An Ancient Peace” by Tanya Huff is the first book in the ‘Peacekeepers’ series and is a new story arc that follows (ex) Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr on her adventures, post organic plastic alien exposure. A team that also includes Craig Ryder, a couple of Krai, a lonely di’Taykan, and an expert sniper can always be expected to take care of trouble where they find it, but a cache of doomsday weapons forming the basis for a grim treasure hunt protected by an overwhelming number of ‘guardians’ could be a more than they can handle…or could it?
The first book of a thrilling new military science fiction spin-off of Tanya Huff's Confederation series.
