Alien Diplomacy

Aliens / Katherine "Kitty" Katt, #5

“Alien Diplomacy” by Gini Koch is part of her ‘Alien/Kitty Katt’ series featuring Alpha Centaurion (A-C) Jeff Martini. A fast-moving science fiction tale with tongue firmly in cheek, this episode describes Kitty Katt-Martini as she is struggling to adapt to being a mom and ambassador surrounded by and affiliated with Armani clad aliens. No, not those from another country...those from another galaxy! Their cover as the American Centaurion diplomats seems reasonable but Kitty is finding it difficult to transition to a less physically active role, especially given her intriguing powers conferred by their precocious baby Jamie. The power games in Washington DC politics is given a new look when the maneuvering includes superbeings, world domination and backstabbing which is opposed by beings with hyperspeed, telepathy and dual hearts. The redistribution of roles has been necessarily imposed by the spate of pregnancies which tends to handicap some of the key personnel but Kitty and Jeff are learning to adapt to each other’s idiosyncrasies and revel in their relationship. Kitty’s Washington Wife class seems to do little to prepare her for moving properly within diplomatic circles and causes her to relieve the angst of high school but she little realizes that the crisis foretold as culminating in the President’s Ball will have some bearing on the lessons that she learns from her classmates. Fortunately she knows some people who know some people so she has plenty of assistance to call upon...if she lives that long.

A lighthearted and entertaining parody of science fiction tales complete with fascinating weapons, intriguing entities which can morph in size and shape and mad scientists contrasted with mundane things like mommy/child exercise classes and designer dress competitions. References to occurrences from past books in the series whet one’s appetite for more information but this book can be read as a whirlwind stand alone. The romance displayed between the main characters is enhanced by the outrageous situations that Kitty finds herself in (or causes) and the self-deprecating humor displayed by the plucky heroine makes this a delightful read.
