“About That Kiss” by Jill Shalvis is a quirky romance that features a couple of folks who are suffering from guilt…and who are a little slow to make a move to get what they want. I had a little trouble connecting with the main couple, and the threats the heroine receives seem a little campy and almost tongue-in-cheek, so I struggled to understand her panic and desperation. There are cute scenes, especially with the heroine’s determination to participate in the investigation and her attempts at disguising herself, and I loved her profession and his loyalty and determination, but I didn’t enjoy the weird dog-in-a-manger attitude of her boss or the scavenger hunt/investigation itself, which seemed haphazard and was solved awkwardly. I normally enjoy this author’s books, but this one didn’t quite sync for me. Despite those drawbacks, the sizzling scenes between the main characters, the love and affection displayed between them and the important people in their lives, the charismatic rescue dog Vinnie, the entertaining chapter headings, and some of the comedic scenes combine to form an enjoyable light read and I have no doubt that fans of this author will be happy with this addition to a fun series.
This adult contemporary romance is part of the ‘Heartbreaker Bay’ series and follows woodworker Kylie Masters as she tries to figure out the complicated men in her life—enigmatic Joe Malone whose special ops training will come in handy and longtime crush and current boss Gib who finally seems to be considering her as a romantic interest. The theft of a treasured heirloom starts her on an investigation that threatens to turn her life upside down but might finally resolve some of the issues that have been plaguing her.

the best thing to do . . .
No, Joe didn’t call after the kiss. He’s the fun time guy, not the forever guy. And Kylie, after all she’s been through, deserves a good man who will stay. But everything about Kylie makes it damned hard to focus, and though his brain knows what he has to do, his heart isn’t getting the memo.
