Picking up a book from a new-to-me author is like laying a bet on something; it could go either way, or it'd be a close call. Barely. What drew me to Sydney Landon's “Keeping It Hot” - aside from that charming book cover - was the blurb. I love a good friends-to-lovers trope and the blurb seems to promise an appealing read. I hate to be proven wrong, but it turned out I don't enjoy the story as much as I thought I would.
“Keeping It Hot” is the first of the new Breakfast in Bed series. It is set in a fictional resort in sunny Florida. The story was alternately told from Zoe and Dylan's POVs, though - given the amount of naivety and cluelessness between the two of them - they almost felt the same to me. I mean, both MCs were likable enough. It's just the way they thought to do something then ended up acting the opposite that was rather exasperating to me. Not only that, what one character did to the other felt too uncomfortably close to manipulation, good intentions notwithstanding. Granted, the result was a quite a hoot to read, but I just couldn't set aside all those plotting and measurments from my mind.
Another thing I didn't expect - though perhaps should've been glaringly obvious from the title - was the number of steamy scenes on page. I'm game for graphic description and all; but I guess I expect more from a couple of childhood friends learning their way in love land than a series of awakened sexual thoughts.
Plot wise, it was somewhat predictable: the revelation, mucking up followed by remedy, the climax before the closing. That said, this book is an entertaining read decorated with a riot of witty characters. In fact I have a hunch a couple of supporting characters from this book will star in their own story in the following installment of the series. And given the vibes I got from their meeting in this book, it would be a story I would want to read…perhaps even more so than I did this introduction to Sydney Landon's writing.
