Patience Winters has worked as a personal assistant to the devilishly handsome Professor Richmond at the Women’s Academy in New York. She truly enjoys working for him because it allows her to spend quite a bit of time with him on a daily basis. You see, Patience finds the man irresistible and has hopelessly fallen in love with him. There’s one problem though. He doesn’t even know how she feels about him and she doesn’t want to be bold enough to tell him in fear of losing his friendship and her job at the Women’s Academy. So after some thought, she decides to keep her secret to herself.
As time moves on, working for this man is nearly driving Patience out of her mind with desire and love for him. But how will she ever find out if he has any feelings for her beyond just the platonic ones he shows her? Maybe stealing a peek into his journal wouldn’t be such a bad thing to do. At least she could see if he has ever mentioned her in one of his entries and maybe learn if the feelings she’s experiencing are mutual between them. So she sets out to return to his office after hours one night to read his journal. But once she discovers his scandalous fantasies, she has no idea what she should do now or even if she should hint to him that she now knows what he’s thinking. After all, she did betray his trust of reading his confidential journal and this might be the end to something that never even began for them.
Does Patience finally admit to him that she has read his journal? If so, how does he react to this invasion of privacy? Could he forgive her enough to start a relationship with her or was her act a means to an end for them?
I found this story to be enjoyable overall. I had hoped that Patience would have mustered up enough courage to find out if the professor liked her, but I was fearful that since it was only the 19th century, she may be deemed too bold for how a lady should be acting. I wanted them to finally be open with each other and say how they were both feeling about one another. But if they did, could this relationship work? The only way to find out this answer is to pick up a copy and read it for yourself!
