Trick to Treat

Sarah Bradley wants what every kid wants at one time or another – to be one of the popular ones in school. She wanted it since she was in freshman year. She’s now a junior and it seems her luck has finally turned for her. The popular girls want her in their group, but there’s a catch. She has to survive a Halloween scavenger hunt with the in crowd to become one of them. They have a list of items that must be found on Halloween night or otherwise they’ll lose and have to go to school dressed up in ridiculous costumes.
During the scavenger hunt, the girls put Sarah up to going into a haunted mansion. Scared out of her wits she does it, but is she prepared for who she’ll find in the dark scary mansion?
Who does she find in the mansion? Do the girls help her to get out if the mansion when she gets locked in? Are they ever able to find all of the scavenger-hunt items on the list? Do the girls win the scavenger hunt in the end? What else happens to Sarah during the scavenger hunt that she didn’t see coming?
I found this young adult story very sweet and thoroughly entertaining. I loved Sarah because she was an ordinary girl just wanting to be part of the in crowd. I felt bad that they didn’t give her a chance sooner to prove herself.  Instead, they waited three years later to ask her to join their group and they weren’t even heartfelt about it. I absolutely loved how Ms. Mendoza ended her story. I would definitely recommend this story to kids and adults alike. Great job!
