The Lighthouse

Best friends always and forever was the pact they made to each other long ago. Malachi and Rachel were inseparable. They did everything together and enjoyed each other's company immensely. There wasn't anything they wouldn't do for each other. They both had a tremendous amount of love and respect for each other and were always there to pick up the pieces when the other person went through some terrible times. They were teased so many times that they looked like the perfect couple. But neither one paid much attention to the comments made. Or should they have?

After Rachel had a bad breakup with a boyfriend, Malachi was there to wipe the tears away and to try to heal her heart. He knew what would make her feel better and without reservation, did it for her. But Malachi was hiding a secret from Rachel that he wished he could have told her. A secret that could change their lives drastically. He was madly in love with her and wanted to take the next step toward cementing what they had together. He wanted to turn it into a relationship now, not just a friendship anymore. But it seemed every time he came close to telling her, she wasn't picking up on the actions that he was showing her. He made a promise to himself that if being her best friend meant keeping her in his life and not being romantically involved with her, then he would cut his losses and do whatever he had to do to still have her with him.

Rachel cared for Malachi very much. She wanted only the best for him and nothing less. She was frustrated with him though when she did finally ask him at one point what he thought if they were ever to take their friendship to the next level. Protecting his feelings from her because he felt it would only push her away, he would just casually dismiss the question and jump onto another topic. She felt hurt that he didn't see her as partner material and she at least knew that she would have to look elsewhere for a mate.

And that is exactly what she did. Whenever she wasn't with Malachi, she would wander into chat rooms and carry on conversations with various people. One person in particular caught her eye. His name was Pierre and he lived in France. They conversed online until the wee hours of the morning, week after week and it started to put a wedge between her and Malachi's friendship. Malachi's gut told him that the situation wasn't a good one. He wasn't comfortable for many reasons with this complete stranger trying to get closer to Rachel. When he expressed his concerns to her, she would just reassure him that she was taking things slow with Pierre and that she would hope that Malachi would wish the best for her.

As the story progresses, Pierre finally flies in to see Rachel and he takes her out on a date. She is so excited, but Malachi isn't. He feels it is his duty to protect her and that's exactly what he is going to do. Hiding at the bar of the restaurant that Rachel and Pierre are meeting at, Malachi watches as the date happens and he can see how Rachel is falling for the Frenchman's charm that he is dishing out. He is sick to his stomach. After they eat, they get ready to leave. She excuses herself from Pierre and walks up to the bar and sits down next to Malachi. She thanks him for caring so much to protect her, but it is unnecessary right now. Malachi tells her to be extremely careful, but she doesn't heed his warning. When Malachi leaves the restaurant, he catches a glimpse of Pierre's car going by with Rachel in the passenger's seat. He jumps into his truck and follows behind them, the whole time feeling a dreadful feeling.

After losing them once, he finally catches up with them and sees that they are strolling on a deserted beach with a lighthouse set in the background. He frantically drives down the winding road to get to them. Pierre and Rachel were sitting against a stony backdrop while she rested her head against his shoulder. He was smooth talking her and eventually
