Twenty-four year old Kendra Zelner and her younger brother, Noah, have recently been on the run trying to get away from their older brother, Robert. He wants nothing more than to see that both his siblings die so he can inherit five million dollars from each of them. He’ll stop at nothing to make certain this happens.
Kendra will do anything to protect Noah. So she decides that leaving their home in New York City is the best plan at the moment and they head to Boulder, Colorado to search out another family member. Once they find Joel, they hope he can help setup a temporary home for them in Boulder. Ironically, she found out that Joel was another sibling from a letter her mother wrote to her while she was dying of cancer. He has no idea that he even has a brother and sister, but she hopes that he’ll help them out when she explains the situation that their mother had children by two different men and lied about it to everyone.
Arriving in Colorado, Kendra has no money to buy Noah something to eat or to even take a cab to Joel’s house. So she resorts to stealing some money to get them by until they see their brother. Having no other option, she finds a car nearby and breaks into it. Finding only thirty-five dollars in the owner’s wallet, which was located in the glove compartment, isn’t much money to get them very far, but it’s better than no money at all. The only thing she doesn’t plan on is having the owner actually catch her in the act.
Colton Lawe steps out of the shower and covered only in his towel, heads to the kitchen to make himself a cup of coffee. As he’s taking his first sip, he looks out the window and can’t believe his eyes. A girl is trying to steal his car. Enraged, he runs out after her with only the towel covering him. When Kendra sees a crazy man running towards her, she does the only thing she can do – she runs away from him. But he has to stop short as he gets closer to her because the towel falls off and he’s completely naked in the street. Kendra thinks he’s very sexy, but takes off running while utilizing his distraction as a means for her escape. Colton will now be late for work because he has to call the police and all his credit card companies to report them stolen. Could this day get any worse? Arriving at work an hour late and having his wallet stolen will be the least of his worries soon. When he finally makes it to the JBM Ranch to start his work day, Colton is in for the biggest surprise of his life when he gets there. His day, undoubtedly, has just gone from worse to worst in a short time when he sees a familiar face talking to his boss, who is also the JBM Ranch owner.
Who is his boss talking to that just made Colton’s day spiral even more out of control? Do Kendra and Noah safely find their way to Joel’s house? What is Joel’s reaction when he finds out that he has two younger siblings he never knew about?
This book is fantastic on so many levels. Ms. Netzel crafted characters that were easy to fall in love with and were so well-rounded that they felt like friends of mine as I was turning the pages. I instantly felt bad for Kendra and Noah and hoped that once they met and spoke to Joel he’d be willing to help them out a bit. As for their maniacal brother Robert, I had nothing but venom for him. He was a crazy man and deserved what he got in the end. For poor Colton, I felt so bad that his luck just seemed to be working against him no matter what he did. I fell in love with him and only wanted him to be happy in the end. If you’re looking for a read that has intrigue, love and deception all wrapped together in a pretty package, than look no further because Ms. Netzel’s story will instantly win you over. This is another keeper I’m adding to my library that’s written by a wonderfully talented author who knows what readers want to read. Well done, Ms. Netzel!
