When True Maybank runs into her former flame, Harrison Gamble, she’s beside herself. He was the one who made her blood surge through her veins years ago. Due to him being from the wrong side of town, True could never consider even the thought of marrying Harrison back then because her family would not hear of it. Fast forward to the present, True is getting ready to marry Dubose, the very guy she has known her whole life and who is very much loved by her parents. When she sees Harrison again, the old feelings seem to resurface and it causes her all kinds of problems. She knows marrying Dubose is the politically correct thing to do in order to keep the peace with her family, but he doesn’t stoke her flame like Harrison always did. Will Harrison remain quiet while watching the woman he’s always wanted in his life prepare to marry another man? Does True finally come to her senses and realize that Harrison is the man who really lights her fire, even though her family will frown upon her associating with him again?
I really enjoyed getting to know True and Harrison and right from the start, I wanted them together. Clearly True was only marrying Dubose because of what her family thought of him and not how she truly felt for him. I honestly felt that she let her family rule her feelings and decisions way too much for an adult woman. When Harrison resurfaced in Biscuit Creek, South Carolina, I was so happy. I wanted him to finally make his move and show True how he felt about her before she made the mistake of marrying Dubose. The banter between these characters was fun to read and I loved the tension that flowed between them.
