Elyse Phillips, a cashier at Goodman's Gifts & Stationery Store, has to work another Valentine's seeing all the dopey merchandise this love season has to offer customers. She doesn't understand what the big deal is with all these boxes of chocolates and that stupid singing Cupid doll, which is a promotional item in the store. Deep down she's bummed out about this love fest holiday because it was this time last year that her boyfriend cheated on her with none other than her best friend, Dina.
Ironically, as she's trying to forget this holiday even exists, there's this new guy in town named Patrick that is here to help his grandfather manage things since his wife had just passed away. There's something about Elyse that Patrick just can't seem to get over and he'll try everything he can to get her to open up to him. But when her own mother decides to ask Patrick to help Elyse with her driving lessons, Elyse is about to die from embarrassment. That is until she starts to get to know Patrick and he really does seem to be a genuinely nice guy.
Does something spark between Elyse and Patrick? Or does she stick to trying to keep him at a distance and not get involved with him?
I thought this was a cute story and my heart went out to Elyse at what happened to her with her ex-boyfriend and best friend. I could see how her situation would taint anyone's perspective, but I had hoped that she would eventually give Patrick the time of day he deserved and see him for the nice guy that he really was. I eagerly hoped that something would happen between them and this would allow Elyse to forget about her past bad experience with her ex-boyfriend and be able to make new memories with Patrick. This is a fun YA story that I think teens could relate to and thoroughly enjoy in the process.
