Poe

When twenty-three-year-old Dimitri Petrov is given a last-minute assignment to cover a séance at the well-known haunted Aspinwall Mansion, things aren’t looking too good for him. It’s Halloween and things aren’t going well for the poor guy. It not only marks the one year anniversary of both his parents passing, but also he’s having a tough time finishing his zombie novel. So when he meets Lisa, a punk-rocker, during his mansion visit, he thinks he’s found his perfect match. It’s when he decides to ask her out, that he realizes it’s the worst mistake of his life because he seems to now have unleashed some pretty powerful, unhappy forces that will do anything to harm him. Does he ever get out of the mansion alive? Does he ask Lisa out?

I found this to be a good read that helped me pass the time. The story had a perfect Halloween setting and the storyline sent chills down my spine. I wanted to see what happened to Dimitri and if he was ever able to ask Lisa out. The one thing that I want to mention is that I did feel the dialogue was too stilted for me to really give it a higher grade than I did. Overall, this was a good story to read if you love paranormal themed books.

Book Blurb for Poe

2013 Winner — Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award — Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror

It’s Halloween, and life is grim for twenty-three-year-old Dimitri Petrov. It’s the one-year anniversary of his parents’ deaths, he’s stuck on page one thousand of his Rasputin zombie novel, and he makes his living writing obituaries.

But things turn from bleak to terrifying when Dimitri gets a last-minute assignment to cover a séance at the reputedly haunted Aspinwall Mansion.

There, Dimitri meets Lisa, a punk-rock drummer he falls hard for. But just as he’s about to ask her out, he unwittingly unleashes malevolent forces, throwing him into a deadly mystery. When Dimitri wakes up, he is in the morgue—icy cold and haunted by a cryptic warning given by a tantalizing female spirit.

As town residents begin to turn up gruesomely murdered, Dimitri must play detective in his own story and unravel the connections among his family, the Aspinwall Mansion, the female spirit, and the secrets held in a pair of crumbling antiquarian books. If he doesn’t, it’s quite possible Lisa will be the next victim.
