In this wonderful anthology of canine stories, we are introduced to a handful of special canines that have gone above and beyond their calling in order to save their owner’s life or to just bring comfort to a person in need of some love and support. Each story tugs at your heartstrings and highlights just how intelligent dogs can be when called upon at a time of need.
I absolutely adored this book and feel that Mr. Collins has done fabulously well in highlighting the canines he had chosen to add to this endearing book. Being a canine lover I just couldn’t wait to read these stories and now having finished the book, I am so happy I did. There were numerous stories that I loved, but two of them that really stuck out to me are as follows. In “Love - What the World Needs Now and Always,” we find that Jill Cucaz and her golden retriever Dakotah spent countless hours doing therapy work and made such a difference in people’s lives especially when the tragedy of 9-11 hit us. The other story, “Duty - The Dog Terrorists Could Not Defeat,” told us about how a blind gentleman named Michael Hingson was led to safety by his trusty guide dog, Roselle, when a plane crashed into the World Trade Center Tower 1 where Michael’s business used to be. Even though Roselle had countless years of guide dog training, she never encountered training which dealt with a terrorist attack. Without a second thought, she successfully led Michael and many others safely out of Tower 1. It is stories like these that tug at your heart. If you are a dog lover, this is definitely a book to read. I highly recommend it to all readers!
From Lassie to Old Yeller to Rin Tin Tin to Marley, dogs have stolen our attention and our hearts. In real life, our own pets are more than just canine companions; they are members of our family. And for some, they are heroes and brave servants.
In Man’s Best Hero, prolific author (and lifelong dog lover) Ace Collins provides a collection of short, dramatic stories about dogs that have gone the extra mile. Though not trained to perform heroic acts, circumstances and the remarkable bond between the dog and its owner led these animals to perform amazing feats that defy logic. Whether it is saving a drowning man, jumping in front of a truck to push a toddler to the curb, or tearing the burning clothes off a child’s back, the actions presented in these stories display courage, loyalty, intelligence, and other admirable qualities of life and faith.
These compelling portraits, told first in the words of the dog and then through exciting narrative that recounts the dog’s actions, will touch reader’s hearts and will leave them with a greater appreciation for their furry friends.
