What a scary little story, Mr. Delaney wrote. I also thought the illustrations were fantastic. They added even more dimension to the already enjoyable story. We’re introduced to fifteen-year-old Billy Calder who is living in an orphanage. He wants to live on his own and the only way for him to be able to do this is to obtain a job. So he takes the first available job offered to him- being a prison guard. The unfortunate part of this is that he has to work at the local castle prison, which everyone knows it’s badly haunted with plenty of ghosts. Having no other option, he takes the position, but things will never be the same for him from that day forward.
I loved the eerie tone that flowed throughout the book and I couldn’t help but frantically turn the pages to see what Billy had gotten himself into by deciding to be a prison guard. If you love teen ghost stories and enjoy books that offer illustrations that enhance a storyline, than look no further. I highly recommend this story and I eagerly look forward to reading more from this author in the near future.
Billy Calder, a fifteen-year-old boy, wants to be able to move out of the orphanage he lives in. Now being the age he is, he can work and earn some money. The only place that seems to offer him a position is at the local castle, which everyone knows is a haunted prison. He really doesn’t want to work there, but in order to move out of the orphanage, he can’t be picky about where he works. Over the next few weeks, he’ll be trained as a prison guard and then he’ll be doing the job on his own. It sounds like a simple plan, but during one of his shifts, he has to go to The Witch Well to feed one of the prisoners. It’s from that very night that Billy’s life is changed forever. What happens during his shift that one particular night?
'This is the entrance to the Witch Well and behind that door you'd face your worst nightmare. Don't ever go through there.' Night falls, the portcullis rises in the moonlight, and young Billy starts his first night as a prison guard. But this is no ordinary prison. There are haunted cells that can't be used, whispers and cries in the night ...and the dreaded Witch Well. Billy is warned to stay away from the prisoner down in the Witch Well. But who could it be? What prisoner could be so frightening? Billy is about to find out ...
An unforgettable ghost story from the creator of the Wardstone Chronicles (Spook's Apprentice) series. With The Seventh Son film out this autumn - starring Jeff Bridges, Ben Barnes and Julianne Moore, everyone will be talking about Joseph Delaney. Illustrated throughout by the incredible Scott M Fischer, this beautifully produced book will make the perfect Halloween gift.
