In this compilation, we are told 38 amazing stories of how canines made a difference in someone’s life. From being paired up with a military veteran, to having a dog help a deaf person have a normal life again and everything in-between, this book tells the stories of some amazing canines and their owners.
I loved each story I read because every dog and their situation was different from one another, but there were three that really were my favorite. I read about, Hank, a Great Dane who stepped in when his owner, McKenzie, was being beaten up by her boyfriend. Hank didn’t think twice about stepping in-between the blows that her boyfriend was trying to afflict on her. Instead, her boyfriend now decided to take his anger out on Hank. Poor Hank suffered with injuries afterward, but he saved McKenzie’s life. Both moved into a domestic violence shelter while they recovered. Since McKenzie wasn’t going to leave Hank behind, the Rose Brooks Center in Kansas City made some adjustments for Hank to live with McKenzie. In doing this, they became the first shelter in Kansas City to allow dogs to stay with their families as they heal through their domestic violence situations.
Another touching story was of Cheyenne, an American Staffordshire Terrier, who was paired up with David, a senior airman in the US Air Force, who was having a terrible time re-acclimating to civilian life again. No one or nothing seemed to help him adjust and he considered taking his own life. That was until he was paired up with Cheyenne and things changed for the both of them that day forward.
The third story that made an impression on me was about Rosie, the first Golden Retriever to become a courthouse dog in New York State. She was specially trained to aid victims that were giving their testimony and not having an easy time of it while they recounted their situations all over again. As they were being asked to retell their story, while on the stand, Rosie would cuddle up to them in the courtroom. She provided a calming presence they needed to get through the difficult hearing.
Each one of these dogs is special in their own way and each story is heartwarming. If you’re a dog lover, this is one book you should definitely look into. You won’t be disappointed!
