Bethanne and Grant Hamlin had been married for twenty years when he decided to throw everything away and have an affair. She was devastated and had to pick up the pieces of not only her life, but also her children’s in the process. Now, six years later, another of Grant’s relationships has ended and he’s looking to rekindle the flame he once had flickering with Bethanne.
She has come so far in the past six years and has made such accomplishments having to depend only on herself to get through the hard times. Though Grant did supply support financially, it wasn’t enough and it forced Bethanne to open her own party business just to make ends meet. Years later, the business is such a success that she has multiple locations and she’s finally in a peaceful place in her life. That is until Grant tells her that he wants to take a second shot at a relationship together because he realizes he screwed up a very good thing between them. Bethanne isn’t sure giving him a second chance is really in the cards for them at this point in her life.
Needing to get away from things for a little while, Bethanne jumps at the opportunity to go away with her ex-mother-in-law, Ruth, for a few weeks. Ruth’s fiftieth high school reunion is coming up and she has decided to take a long road trip leading up to the reunion. Bethanne doesn’t want her driving by herself so she asks Ruth if she’d like some company on the trip. Ruth is thrilled and they start getting ready to leave in a few days. In the process, Bethanne tells her son and daughter and Annie gets so excited that she asks if she could also tag along with her mother and grandmother. Three family members in the same car traveling over the next few weeks bring these women closer together then they could have ever imagined a trip could do.
The question is does the time away allow Bethanne to make a decision of giving Grant another chance at a relationship together? Or does something happen to her on the road trip that changes her life forever?
I loved this story by Ms. Macomber and I’m a true fan of her writing. She knows how to bring such emotion to her characters and you feel as if they’re real people that you’re getting to know. I enjoyed seeing where these characters were in their lives and while spending time together they’ve helped each other to grow in ways they never thought possible. I loved how the author withheld Bethanne’s decision until the very end when she had to make the choice of which fork in the road she had to take in order to move forward in her life. This is definitely a story you shouldn’t pass up!
In the middle of the year, in the middle of her life, Bethanne Hamlin takes a road trip with her daughter, Annie, and her former mother-in-law, Ruth. They’re driving to Florida for Ruth’s 50th high-school reunion. A longtime widow, Ruth would like to reconnect with Royce, the love of her teenage life. She’s heard he’s alone, too...and, well, she’s curious. Maybe even hopeful. Bethanne herself needs time to reflect, to ponder a decision she has to make. Her ex-husband, Grant — her children’s father — wants to reconcile now that his second marriage has failed. Bethanne’s considering it.... Meanwhile, Annie’s out to prove to her onetime boyfriend that she can live a brilliant life without him! So there they are, three women driving across America. They have their maps and their directions — but even the best-planned journey can take you to a turn in the road. Or lead you to an unexpected encounter — like the day Bethanne meets a man named Max who really is a hero on a Harley. That’s when Bethanne’s decision becomes a lot harder. Because Grant wants her back, but now there’s Max.... From Seattle’s Blossom Street to the other end of the country, this is a trip that could change three women’s lives.
