A Marriage of Convenience

Sharon Philips is notified by her late father’s probate lawyer that there are strict instructions her father requests her to follow now that he’s gone. He forbids there to be a funeral or even a memorial service of any kind. Sharon feels saddened by this because she never got to say goodbye to her father and now it seems that she won’t get the chance to do it at all. While this news may be a tough pill for her to swallow, she can’t believe what she hears when the lawyer further explains the stipulations on her inheritance.

It seems that her father has clearly stated in his will that Sharon will receive half of her father’s ranch in California, while Taylor Braddock, his step-son and ranch foreman, will be receiving the other half. But there’s a catch to this. Sharon must marry Taylor in order for them to both receive their shares of the ranch. If either of them contests the stipulations, it’s stated the entire ranch will then revert to charity and will become a wildlife refuge. Sharon is beside herself from the news. No way, no how will she even consider marrying Taylor. Her heart was broken by him ten years ago and she just doesn’t have it in her to reopen old wounds.

Being a lawyer herself, she realizes that her father covered every legal base he could in his will. It doesn’t leave her or Taylor any option other than to marry each other. So she decides to fly to Glendora, California and she’ll reluctantly do whatever it takes for her inheritance to go through. Once everything is settled and the ranch is legally in her and Taylor’s name, they’ll figure out what to do from there.

Arriving at the ranch, Sharon isn’t prepared to see that Taylor is even more ruggedly handsome now than when she last saw him ten years ago. She decides to act very distant and reserved whenever he’s around and she’ll look into getting a divorce from him as soon as possible. But while they start spending time together, things don’t go as planned for either of them.

What happens after Taylor and Sharon are married and spend some time together? Why did Taylor break Sharon’s heart ten years earlier? Is there the remotest possibility that these two still have feelings for each other after all these years have passed?

This is the second novel I’ve read by Ms. Owens Malek and I have to say she’s made a big fan out of me. I love her writing style and I really enjoyed getting to know her characters. What I really liked is that she molded both Sharon and Taylor to be as human as possible with plenty of flaws between them. Her readers can easily relate to her normal characters and in turn, will have no problem falling in love with them while they tell their side of the story. This is definitely a fun story that completely engrossed me from start to finish. I would highly recommend this book to other readers and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future!
